Job Description
Teach ESL online to Chinese children between the ages of 4 to 16. Online ESL Company Dada plans and prepares all the lesson material for you so that you can log on and teach flexibly from home with little to no preparation!
Dada pay their teachers between $12-$21 per hour. Earnings are dependent on the number of hours teachers work each month. For instance, teachers who work 60 hours per month will earn significantly more than teachers who work 20 hours per month.
Teachers have one-to-one classes with children. Teachers usually have the same students for as long as students choose, which means you could have the same regular student for months or even years.
There is no limit to the number of hours teachers can teach each week. Schedules are fixed as the teacher has their regular students every week. Teachers can also add extra hours to their schedule each week on a flexible basis.
Requirements
- Native English Speaker with a neutral accent (Ireland, UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada)
- Prior teaching experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in any subject
- Have ESL certification with a valid certificate number
Technical Requirements
- Computer (Mac or Windows) with Google Chrome browser
- Headset with microphone
- Webcam (HD webcam preferred)
- Stable internet connection (wired connection preferred)
Remember, if you don’t meet these requirements, then you won’t get hired!
Dada have many teacher signups every month, so it’s important that you at least meet the basic requirements.
Timezone
Be mindful of the GMT+8 timezone. This will likely mean classes are in the early morning for US and Canadian residents.
Most students are online at 6 pm-9:00 pm on weekdays and 9 am-9 pm on weekends (GMT+8 Beijing Time). Teachers can also add less popular hours to their schedule when working there for a while.
Steps for Applying to Dada
The total time taken to fill out your application is less than one week. Complete your application at your own pace.
- Sign up to Dada and enter your basic information (5 minutes)
- Complete a live interview (30 minutes)
- Submit documentation and background check (5 minutes)
- Sign the contract
The interview allows you to demonstrate your teaching skills. The interview takes about thirty minutes. While talking about yourself, you will also be asked to teach some mock slides.
You can practice the mock slides ahead of time to prepare for the interview. The interviewer will let you know after a few days if you have passed the interview.
Criteria for Passing the Mock Class
Dada evaluates the following criteria, which will determine whether or not you pass the interview:
- Warm-up and Context setting
- Appropriate language use
- Student engagement
- Eliciting/Checking understanding
- Challenges the learner
- Error correction & feedback
- Class management & timing
Teaching from a place with a good classroom background and lighting is critical to passing the interview. Teachers should also use TPR to explain concepts and instructions.
Dada doesn’t have any contract length agreements, but they prefer if teachers can work there for at least six months to build up a good relationship with their regular students.
Taxes
Teachers who work for Dada are considered independent contractors. Teachers are responsible for paying their own taxes in accordance with their tax jurisdiction.
Payment
Teachers are paid on the 15th of each month via Payoneer or Transferwise. Teachers can also receive payments directly to their bank account, but this might incur large currency exchange fees if teachers don’t have a US bank account.
