Are you up for the challenge of teaching at Gogokid?

Gogokid is an online ESL company that connects teachers to kids from China. Gogokid operates a 1-on-1 teaching model that provides all the lesson material for teachers.

Let’s discuss Gogokid requirements for teachers, which you should consider before signing up.

Sign up to Gogokid and contact us at hello@tprteaching.com; if you have any concerns with your application, we would be glad to assist you.

Gogokid Basic Requirements

To be considered as a Gogokid teacher, applicants must:

  1. Be a native English speaker eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.
  2. Have a bachelor’s degree in any subject
  3. Have a 120-Hour ESL Certificate (preferred)
  4. Teaching experience in any setting
  5. Eligible to Work in the U.S. or Canada

Gogokid is looking for those who are eligible to work or live in the U.S. or Canada.

You can teach at Gogokid from anywhere in the world as long as you have a stable wifi connection!

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Any Subject

Teachers must also have a bachelor’s degree in any subject to join Gogokid. The degree doesn’t have to be related to teaching.

Gogokid requires its teachers to have a degree; therefore, students who are in the process of completing their degrees are not eligible to apply.

There are other opportunities for those who do not have a degree. See the job opportunities for those who do not have a degree. We also list job opportunities specifically for college students.

2. Have a 120-Hour ESL Certificate

Teaching ESL usually requires a certificate. Fortunately, you can get one very cheaply if you just want to teach online. This will provide you with a valid certificate number that Gogokid can verify.

While Gogokid says that a teaching certificate is preferred rather than required, this may affect your starting base rate. Gogokid asks you for your expected base rate and why you deserve that base rate. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get a certificate as it counts towards your relevant experience and qualifications.

I took the TEFL Academy course, which I’d recommend you take if you are serious about teaching English abroad or online for the long term.

3. Passion for Teaching and Kids

At Gogokid you will be teaching young students. Kids can be as young as three or four. You get to teach them one-to-one, so there is a lot of interaction in the online classroom. This allows you to build relationships with students, as students might begin to choose you regularly as their teacher.

4. Teaching Experience in Any Setting

Please read this because it is important.

It is important to have at least one year of teaching experience mentioned in your Gogokid application.

If you have worked with children as a mentor, coach, or teacher, this experience applies to the role. You do not need formal teaching experience in a brick-and-mortar school.

Technical Requirements for Teaching at Gogokid

  • Mac OS 10.10x or higher/ Windows 7or higher.
  • At least 8GB RAM, Intel Core i5 above.
  • An external or integrated HD webcam, see some HD webcam options.
  • Wired DSL internet connection with at least 25 Mbps download speed.
  • Google Chrome is the recommended browser.
  • Ethernet cable preferred.

Good Working Laptop or Desktop

Having a fast and efficient laptop is critical for your success. Here are some laptops you might want to consider.

If you are using MAC, your system should be an OS 10.10x or higher. If you are using a PC, Windows 7, 8, or 10 or higher is required.

Your device should have at least 8 GB of RAM with an Intel Core i5 or above.

Stable Internet Connection

Internet speed is important for Gogokid’s interactive content.

You can check your internet speed here. Gogokid requires a 25 Mbps download speed.

You may have to switch providers to get the speed you want.

Ethernet Cable is Preferred

An ethernet cable can help you maintain your high internet speed and provide a more stable connection; therefore, it is recommended when teaching online.

Hooking your internet modem to an Ethernet connection can help reduce technology issues you might encounter teaching online.

You could also use a powerline adapter if your modem is too far away.

Teaching Style Required by Gogokid

Gogokid is looking for specific teaching skills from their teachers. Here is what Gogokid look from teachers in the interview and the ESL Classroom:

  • TPR (total physical response)
  • Props (a minimum of two in each class)
  • Simple language that is level-appropriate
  • High student output and lower teacher talk time
  • Speak naturally at a slightly slower speed
  • Model– “I do, we do, you do.”
  • Positive Corrections
  • Finish the lesson in the allotted time
  • Sound out words correctly.

This teaching style is required for the interview.

Other Gogokid Requirements

Other things you may not have thought about but need to be taken into consideration:

  • Props and Rewards
  • Office equipment, such as a headset, webcam, and lighting
  • A suitable teaching background, such as a map or tapestry

Props and Rewards

Gogokid asks that teachers use props in each of the lessons.

Props include teddies, flashcards, toys, or other forms of realia. You can buy some reasonably cheap online from Amazon or at Dollar Tree. Check out our props.

You can also give students a “reward” when they do a good job. The rewards could take shape like stars, hearts, balloons, emojis. You can be even more creative and build exciting rewards such as a fishbowl with colorful fish as a reward or draw something on the whiteboard. I use virtual rewards with Manycam.

Equipment

You are required to have a headset with a microphone, stable output and input.

There are lots of options on Amazon. See this headset.

You are also required to have a webcam.

You may already have an HD webcam built into your laptop, but if not, there are plenty of options like this one. See our webcam recommendations for more.

Last but not least, don’t forget your lighting.

Gogokid really emphasizes good lighting. If you live in the U.S. or Canada, you will have to get up early, so you will need some ideas for good lighting. See some lighting options here.

Classroom Setup

Have a kid-friendly classroom that is inviting for students. Many teachers opt for a background containing maps, flags, or tapestries.

For more ideas, please see our review of the best teaching backgrounds.

You Don’t Need to Speak Chinese

You must speak in English simply without any incidental language (um, you know, like). You do not need to say any Chinese. The slides with the images are explanatory and allow the student to learn English through English instruction alone.
