Gogokid is an ESL teaching company connecting children from China with online English teachers from the U.S. and Canada. It is a relatively new company, having just opened in 2018. Their mission is to encourage their students to use English to become creative and critical thinkers.
What are the requirements to work at Gogokid?
- Be eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.
- At least two years of experience working with children (preferred)
- Teachers are required to have a Bachelor’s degree or above.
- Teaching Certification (TESOL, TEFL or CELTA)
- Some teaching experience
- A stable internet connection: check your speed here.
If you have yet to get a teaching certificate, check out my review of The TEFL Academy. If you want to learn more about the different types of certification, you can check this article on the differences between a TEFL and TESOL certificate.
Make sure to have a suitable classroom background when you are teaching and have some props. Props are great for teaching young children and keeping their attention, and you should try to use some in your interview, if possible.
If your laptop doesn’t already have an HD webcam integrated, you will need to buy an external HD webcam to connect to your device.
- Students range from 3-12 years old
- One-on-one classes
- Lesson material provided
- 25-minute classes
What makes Gogokid so appealing to teachers is the one-on-one classes which is less stressful than teaching group classes. You also have a five minute break between classes which gives you time to prepare for the next class or fill out the student review form.
- No minimum hours
- Monday to Friday: 6pm -10pm Beijing Time
- Saturday and Sunday: 9am-10pm
- Check your timezone here
Teachers are advised to open their schedule a month in advance, but are allowed to open slots at least 48 hours ahead of time.
The peak teaching hours in China are the evening hours when children are home from school. Teachers can add more slots during the weekend.
Salary: How Much Does Gogokid Pay?
- Gogokid pays a service fee rate and incentives, that pay between $14-$25 per hour.
- Base Pay: 7-10 USD per 25-minute class, depending on your credentials and interview
- A “Credit Score System” incentive scheme applies up to 5 USD bonus per hour based on class quality and quantity
Pay is determined at the end of the month based on your credit score. The credit score system is based on a few factors, such as:

Preparing for the Interview
The next step is to schedule an interview. You will be sent all the material necessary to prepare. Review the material carefully as the interview performance will determine your base rate.
Click each date in the calendar to see the relevant interview slots. You will be able to see the next four days and times available for taking the interview. If you don’t see anything, don’t worry as new time slots are updated each day.
Prepare for the interview in advance with the preparation pack. The interview prep pack contains ESL teaching tips, classroom basics, and demo materials.
When you feel ready, proceed to book the interview. You will know if you have passed the interview within 48 hours.
Attending the Interview
Teachers must log in to the teachers portal and complete the interview in the virtual classroom. You can enter the interview 30 minutes before your scheduled time to familiarize yourself with the classroom features.
There are two kinds of interviews. Choose the one which suits you best:
- Live Interview
The live interview takes place with a real interviewer.
The interviewer will ask some questions about you and your teaching experience. You will also be asked to do a 10-minute mock demo with the interviewer.
The interviewer will pretend to be a young student with limited English. You have to teach the material like you would teach a child.
The interviewer will give you some feedback and advice on your demo and you are free to ask questions.
- Recorded Demo
The other option is to complete a recorded demo. The recorded demo lasts for 15 minutes, and you complete it without an interviewer.
Similar to the live interview, you answer some questions about yourself and your teaching experience. You will then conduct the ten-minute demo by yourself. When you are finished, you can close the website tab.
Questions to Expect at the Interview
- Tell me about yourself
- Tell me about your teaching experience
- Why do you want to teach online?
- What is your expected pay?
For more information to help you pass the interview and secure the best pay possible, please check out our Gogokid interview tips.
When you pass your interview, you will be invited to attend orientation. This consists of two parts:
- Complete the orientation quiz
- Schedule the mock class
You will be given documents to help you pass the quizzes. You can take the orientation quiz as many times as you need until you pass.
The mock class is 10-minutes long. You will need to review some mock teaching materials beforehand.
When you complete this part of the orientation, you can begin to update your teacher profile by submitting all the necessary documentation.
Wait until Gogokid reviews your documents and approves your account.
Sign the Contract
Congratulations! The last step is to sign the contract and start teaching!
Review: What do teachers think of Gogokid?
Here’s an honest review of what teachers had to say about Gogokid in 2020.
First and foremost, teachers love being able to create a flexible schedule from home. This gives them great freedom to decide their working hours while having fun yet rewarding career teaching children.
Teachers have reported solid hours and good students at Gogokid.
A warning to all new teachers! Teachers dislike the new incentives program, also referred to as the “credit score.” The system is quite unpredictable, and teachers find it challenging to plan their income. However, this is a fairly new scheme which could change in time.
Teachers are also disappointed with the poor management communication and excessive requirements to perform and improve, despite already having great reviews. Gogokid keeps a watchful eye to ensure teachers are performing at their best but sometimes teachers can feel this is arbitrary and unnecessary.
As an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own taxes in your jurisdiction.
The reviews suggest that teachers were happier at Gogokid before the coronavirus, before the new pay incentive scheme. However, Gogokid remains an attractive offer to teachers who wish to work from home.
As Gogokid is a newer company, the rules are changing often. You should always plan to have a second company to teach at, if possible.
